Reconstructing Amelia: Food Ideas for IRL Book Clubs

recon ameliaThe only bad thing about having an online book club is the inability to meet up, have a good meal, maybe a glass of wine and hang out with some literary friends.

But just because Book Lovers Unite Online Book Club can’t meet up and eat good food, doesn’t mean you should suffer. Each month, when I host Book Lovers Unite Online Book Club- I’ll be providing a recipe. An idea for a food for the book club. Is this stuff I’ve created? Oh heck no- listen, honestly, the dishes in the kitchen quake with fear as I walk through. I’m terrible. I make messes. I drop things. I need SIMPLE.

However, some people’s dishes positively sing when they walk in the kitchen (I’m giving you the stink eye, people!) So, my recipes will be easy. Simple. Possibly even allowed to be prepared ahead. You kitchen goddesses, though, feel free to fancy up the recipe as much as you can!

I just finished Reconstructing Amelia this morning. And Amelia and Kate needed some comfort food. Something to stick on their ribs and make them feel full. Something they could linger over.

Spaghetti. They NEEDED spaghetti.

Fancy Spaghetti:

Here is the fancier Paula Deen recipe for Baked Spaghetti. The picture and description sounds pretty good (regardless of your feelings about ole Paula.)

Here is how my mother, S, makes spaghetti (it ain’t any kind of fancy, folks!):

Brown hamburger meat (whatever type you prefer). Pour Del Monte Spaghetti sauce on it and let it simmer. Cook your noodles (she prefers thin, I prefer penne). After everything is cooked- bring to table and dig in ( we usually have garlic bread and a salad as side items). Got meat and noodles left over? Mix them together in a bowl- stick them in the fridge and re-heat for next day.

This is how I made spaghetti in college:

Cooked noodles (penne, usually) and either warmed Del Monte sauce or Ragu Meat sauce up- mixed together and boom! There was a version of spaghetti that was cheap, easy, and could feel a bunch of us!

Drinks:

I drink Moscato generally (most do not prefer it as they say it is too sweet- but to me, it’s exactly what I like). Usually in my IRL book club- we have a couple of wines (a white and a red) and have a glass while people are arriving. Dinner is usually served with non-alcoholic beverages.

Dessert:

Tiramisu would make my day- HERE is a recipe that looks pretty interesting. If that does not work, I suggest something easy: Chocolate Chip cookies with a big glass of milk ( in the whole comforting food thing- chocolate chip cookies and milk go hand in hand.)

Have a happy book club meeting 🙂

Reconstructing Amelia Week 3 Questions/Discussion!

recon ameliaWe are at week 3 in our discussion! Some of us have finished. Some have not. The library is still holding at least 1 person back from getting the book!

But- we are here. We are almost finished. YAY!

Week 3 Thoughts:

1. The principal- why did he target Amelia for the truth about the Magpies? Was it because Amelia is the good girl? The honor student? Or was it because Kate is not involved in the school- like some of the other’s parents- and might not in the position to complicate the principal’s life?

2. The school is closing ranks, circling the wagon. Why? Because they have blood on their hands and they know it? Or is someone higher than them pulling puppet strings?

3. Money. It makes the world go round. What is the problem with money in Reconstructing Amelia?

4. Is Amelia being “catfished” in a sense? #nospoilers- just let me know if you have a feeling.

5. Dylan and Zadie- best friends till the end? Or is Dylan a pawn? Or is Zadie the real pawn? Again #nospoilers- just thoughts!

6. How hard is this for Kate? To find this stuff out? To know that Amelia was being bullied?

7. Why is the principal less concerned about Amelia actually dying on school grounds- and when the word “bullying” was mentioned- it seemed to get his attention?

***Note: I have not read the last chapter of the assigned reading for this week. I USUALLY read the night before I post the questions- and I read most of them last night. But I still have 1 more to read- so more questions may be added.

Reconstructing Amelia- Week 2 Thoughts/Discussion

So Book Lovers Unite Online Book Club folks- we are beginning week 2 of Reconstructing Amelia- and I’m hearing a lot of “I Love It” and “It’s so hard to put down”. I LOVE that you are loving this book!

Thoughts/Questions for Week 2:

1. What are you thinking about the Magpies?

2. Are you picking up on any red herrings? I’m seeing a couple of ways this could go- but, are they red herrings? Or what?

3. Do not reply with a name or anything- but is anyone getting a suspicion as to who Amelia’s dad might be?

4. What is the Magpies motivation?

5. Sylvia- BFF or frenemy?

6.  What do you think should happen to social media after you die? Should someone just delete everything? Or not?

7. GraceFULLY is written by someone who is in the know. Is the author everywhere or are there more than 1 authors?

8. Should the school be held liable for some of the things we are finding out?  While most is not taking place on school ground, exactly, some of the things are being discussed and planned on school grounds. Should the school be more involved? Or are they as involved as possible?

9. Dylan- queen bee, wannabe, or an actual nice person who may or may not be game playing?

Literary Friday, ya’ll…..

Friday. Ahhhh…..

1. Deep South Mag and their #literaryfriday: Sinning across the South, book signings and more!

Reconstructing Amelia- Week 1 Questions/Thoughts

recon amelia

It’s here! It’s here! The day we thought would never arrive! Throwing confetti in the air, pouring glasses of champagne kind of day- Book Lovers Unite Online Book Club begins!

Reminder: We’ll only be discussing the assigned reading for the week- and this post (Week 1) is the place to discuss. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

I began reading last night on the Kindle- and I’m enjoying so far!

Questions and Thoughts:

1. From the first page- I’m getting the feeling that RECONSTRUCTING AMELIA has a Gossip Girl/The Skulls/possibly a Mean Girls feel- is anyone else picking up on those movie/TV shows feelings?

2. Let’s talk about first thoughts of this cover: It’s dramatic. It’s interesting. It’s fitting for the book (at least my first impressions). Sometimes a cover does not match up with the book- did the cover art folks for Reconstructing Amelia nail it or not? (It’s ok if you change your mind later on- we’re going on first impressions here!)

3. The title- Reconstructing Amelia- a simple, yet poignant title. Reconstructing means to put something back together in the simplest terms- so the title is telling. However, is there a possibility that there is going to be more to this title?

4. We’ll discuss this as the month goes on; but what are your thoughts on teenagers, social media, and their parents? Is the teenagers just having normal “teenage rebellion”? Or is social media adding an extra layer to the normal “teenage rebellion” and making interactions between teenagers and parents harder?

5. What do you think of how the school environment is portrayed? Is this an accurate look? Or is this more of an East Coast prep school type portrayal that we see in books and movies? Is it a stereotype or is it accurate?

I can’t wait to see everyone’s thoughts and opinions!

1 day till RECONSTRUCTING AMELIA Book Lovers Unite Online Book Club begins!

It seems like it was forever ago that this idea began, that people started expressing interest, that I finally got the lead out and decided to do this! But, here we are- 1 day away from the discussion beginning!

Thanks to all my Twitter friends, Jen S,  and everyone else who just saw this and decided to say they wanted to join- this is going to be a fun discussion!

Just 1 quick little note: I’ll be posting the questions and thoughts every Friday- but that does not mean that Friday is the only day of discussion! Think of Book Lovers Unite like a cocktail party- you come in, grab your drink, begin chatting with people. Then perhaps you need to take a break and go catch a breath of fresh air- just come back to discuss when you can!

Here is a link from a previous post- think of it like a FAQ/Guideline thing that you should look over!

One last thing: Just before this starts, let’s just be sure to be respectful of each other. I don’t expect a problem (because we’re adults who like to read and discuss books- and we understand that each person has their own opinion!)

See ya’ll tomorrow- I can’t wait!

Hope to see you around!

Happy Reading,

Traveling With T

Reconstructing Amelia (Book Lovers Unite Online Book Club June 2013 pick)

It’s May 24- which means we are 1 WEEK away from the beginning of Book Lovers Unite Online Book Club- in case you did not know, this is a club that I’ve been wanting to begin for some time. Having my own online book club has been a dream for some time- and it’s happening! Book-Alicious Mama is going to co-host (so thankful for having a co-host who’s passionate about reading!)

Ok- here are some guidelines for this month:

1. Read ahead, read along, come in late, whatever- BUT each Friday questions and thoughts for the weeks reading will be posted on Traveling With T. Please only comment about that weeks reading in that post (don’t “spoil” for the readers who are actually reading along (and for anyone who might join later!)

2. You may have seen #bookloversunite being used- as of now, we will not be having a Twitter chat or discussing Reconstructing Amelia on Twitter (at least not a scheduled discussion!) You may wonder why- and this is it: With Twitter we have character length to worry about- and I’d like for us to have a deeper discussion if at all possible.

How will the hashtag #bookloversunite be used? I’m so glad you asked! I’ve made a Pinterest board to post pictures of Reconstructing Amelia (and future Book Lovers Unite Online Book Club choices!) So help a girl out: If you are reading Reconstructing Amelia, take a pic of the book with your coffee, on your bedside table, with your pet posing with the book- whatever (obviously no obscene pictures, though). When you post them to Twitter, use #bookloversunite and you may see that pic on Pinterest!

When each Friday’s questions/thoughts are posted- I’ll post on Twitter and use #bookloversunite.

I’m working on some more surprises- and if/as things happen, you’ll be sure to know!

3. It was asked if we’d have blog buttons to post on each person participating blog- WE WILL. Where are they? I have someone creating them- and as soon as they are finished- then they will be posted. Feel free to “take” them- but please do not use them for your own personal projects.

4. Most importantly- this is to be fun! So, get your book (buy or borrow), and join in on reading Reconstructing Amelia!
