A Likely Story

Lindsey Norris, Briar Creek librarian, is having a normal day. Some book talk, the craft-afternoon group being there, and talk of her love life. All in all, a normal day for Miss Lindsey.

When it’s time to take some books out to one of the islands for Stewart Rosen- Lindsey’s ex, Sully, gladly runs her out there- hoping to spend a little time talking with her.

When they arrive at the island, though, something is amiss. Stewart is not there to greet them. This causes both Lindsey and Sully some alarm- especially Sully, because he knows from first hand experience how protective the brothers are of the island and how they set traps for trespassers. Going Going Ganache by Jenn McKinlay

Going, Going Ganache is book 5 in Jenn McKinlay’s Cupcake series- and the series is still going strong!

Mel and Angie, owners of Fairy Tale Cupcakes, are in trouble. After the cupcake photo shoot goes south (thanks to help from a certain busybody); the magazine owner and Tate are not happy. As part of Mel and Angie’s punishment, Ian Hannigan, SWS magazine owner, decides that his team needs a project to help foster team spirit. And Mel and Angie are the perfect people to teach the magazine team how to make cupcakes.

While Mel and Angie are not happy to be teaching a workshop on making cupcakes, compared to some of the others, they look thrilled. With each day presenting it’s own unique set of challenges, the final straw is when Mel discovers a body. Now Mel must discover the who, what, and why of the murder- and wonders if someone in the kitchen is the killer. Mel’s got her hands full with cupcakes and killers- and  her secret engagement with Joe. With a good-looking cop paying equal attention the crime and Mel, does Joe have some competetion?

As the charity event draws closer, Tate’s acting weird, Angie’s worried, and Mel’s got her hands full. Will the 3 friends be able to solve the crime and get the cupcakes to the charity event in one edible piece? Read Going, Going Ganache to find out!

Stuck on Murder(A Decoupage Mystery) by Lucy Lawrence

Stuck on Murder (A Decoupage Mystery) is the first book in the series by Lucy Lawrence. Set in a New England town, the main character Brenna Miller is a recent transplant to the town. She teaches decoupage classes at Tenley’s (her former college roommate) store- Vintage Papers. The town is a perfect place to help Brenna forget a troubling incident from her past- as it’s small and sleepy. However, the small-town charms are questionable when the mayor asks Brenna for help in talking to her landlord, Nate, about selling some of his lake front property to a developer- which will in turn benefit the town. With relunctance, Brenna mentions this to Nate- which starts a feud with mayor when Nate refuses to sell. The situation escalates- then Brenna finds the mayor’s body stuffed into a trunk.

Did Nate kill the mayor to save the land? Or is someone taking advantage of the fact that Nate and the mayor have been seen arguing publicly? Could it be the hungry for fame newpaper editor? Or maybe another disgruntled citizen of the town?

Stuck on Murder is a lovely start to the series. Brenna’s a nice character-and the town and the other characters are great backdrops. The book also has the beginnings of a romance- however, be prepared for another twist in that department. For fans of decoupage- there are also tips.

Recommended.

A Deal to Die For (Good Buy Girls) by Josie Belle

A Deal to Die For is book #2 in Cruisin Thru the Cozies 2013 Reading Challenge.

Josie Belle (aka Jenn McKinlay) has a cute series on her hands with the Good Buy Girls! In book 2, A Deal to Die For, Maggie and the Good Buy Girls have their eyes on things for the opening of Maggie’s new second-hand shop. They decide to go to a flea market where Vera Madison will be selling some of her couture- and Maggie is only too excited to look over and purchase some pieces. Unfortunately, so is Summer- so after an incident, Maggie decides to go and check on Vera who is at the doctor’s clinic. However, when Maggie arrives, Vera is dead. And the good Dr. Franklin becomes a person of interest.

Maggie and the Good Buy Girls have to work together to help clear Dr. Franklin, keep the vintage couture out of Summer’s hands and find out what skeletons were hanging in Vera Madison’s closet along with the fabulous vintage clothing. To top it off, Maggie finds herself having caught the eye of 2 local, eligible men. Which one will she choose?

What books  are you looking forward to reading?

A Year of Blogging- My Blog’s a year old!

Today my blog, Traveling With T, turned a year old. It’s been a crazy, fun, wild, frustrating, challenging year. But, and here’s the key: It’s been so worth it. Fulfilling. Enjoyable.

When I started Traveling With T, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wanted a blog where I could write about experiences- local restaurants, book signings, events. I wanted some anonymity, I wanted a title that was catchy, but didn’t pigeonhole me- one that I could discuss different things; but still with a focus.

I didn’t start the blog because I had a burning desire to be a writer (although, I have much respect for writers).  I’ve thought over the last few years that someone publishing my thoughts from the pitfalls of guys using emoticons in texts, to the art of the road trip, to why being a nail polish namer has to be an interesting job (plus much, much, much more) would make for an interesting book- but I’ve never really had a burning desire to write for a living.

When I was a kid, I used to read Ann M. Martin books, Francine Pascal and more. Reading these books, I always thought it would be so nice to get to meet the people behind the books I loved. But, a small-town girl, states and hours away from these authors never did get a chance to meet them. As I grew up, I put the idea out of my head- reading was not cool (even though I secretly read in high school). The older I got, the more I realized reading was a part of me- it was something I needed. With social media, I can chat with authors, learn about book signings and more. Going to a book signing is the best kind of fun. Proud to report that I’ve been to several book signings over the past year- and I love each and every one.

Part of the reason I started blogging is that while I don’t have burning desire to be a writer/author- I do have a strong desire to be around the writer types. To hear where they get inspiration, to see their works comes to life. To be able to sit down with them- with total wide eyed innocence and discuss the things I love, dislike, and more about their books. An author has a creative energy that I adore being around- a creative energy that fills a place in my heart and life. An author gives me something to think about, something to ponder deeply and maybe even creatively for days, weeks. When I’m around an author-type person, I feel like I’m the best version of myself- the bright, inquisitive person- the person who is fully validated because she is with people who speak a language that she loves. I feel smarter, brighter, almost Wonder Woman-ish.

There have been times over the past year that I thought of just deleting my blog. It seemed like it wasn’t going anywhere, some days it wasn’t even fun. But, slowly, I began to get followers- and then I became involved with She Reads Blog Network- and that for me was all the validation I needed to continue. While, I don’t think I started the blog with the full on intention to review books completely- being able to review books is something I find pleasure in. It’s back to that whole “books fill a place in me, in my creative part”.

My desire for myself and my blog:

1. Host giveaways. I promote other blog giveaways, but have never had one at Traveling With T. 2013 will be the year that changes.

2. Continue to review books. Fiction, #southernlit, cozies and more.

3. To one day, be more involved in the process of an author’s life. A publicist, perhaps? To be more involved in the work of an author from the beginning of the process to the end would be very fulfilling.

On today, as my blog turns a year old- a heartfelt “Thank You” to my followers, the people who “like”, retweet, and share my blog posts. Without you, my blog would be floating around in the internet. Each time you like something I write- I”m reminded of the Sally Field “You Like me! You Really Like Me!”

To MVBClub- thanks for letting me guest blog, for being an inspiration and a sounding board. xoxo

To Melinda McGuire- thank you for letting me guest blog about Oxford and Faulkner- you’re the best!

To Deep South Magazine- thank you for every RT, every comment and more. My appreciation for you is beyond words.

To authors (Erika Marks, Erika Robuck, Nichole Bernier, Michael Lee West, Meg Donohue, Jenn McKinlay, Cleo Coyle,Lucy Burdette,Robin O’Bryant, Claire Cook, Mia March, Sarah Jio, Michael Morris, Peggy Sweeney-McDonald, Megan Abbott) Thank you for your books. For taking time out of your schedules to tweet with me, to call in for book clubs. Thank you for writing great books and books that I anticipate being great.

To She Reads, She Reads Blog Network, and Kimberly Brock- I’m so overcome with happiness for being able to be part of She Reads. Thank you- Thank You- Thank You. Being able to be a part of this great group just makes me feel all sparkly and happy. Honored to be a part of a such a sparkly wonderful group.

To authors everywhere: Even if I don’t know you- you inspire me. To the dreamers, the people with the imaginations and creativity, to the ones who have the desire, drive and determination to write a book: Never change. Keep writing. Keep inspiring people. Write not just because you can; but because you can’t live in a world that’s without your writing.

Best,

Traveling With T

PS: A special thank you to Ann M. Martin, Judy Blume, Francine Pascal and the Nancy Drew books: without your books, I might not be the reader I am today. Beyond grateful for the love of reading the books you’ve written that has instilled a love of reading in me. “Thank you” seems so inadequate- but that’s all I have to say.

50% Off Murder (Good Buy Girls) by Josie Belle

50% off Murder by Josie Belle (a pen name of Jen McKinlay) is the first book in a new cozy series- and it’s a charmingly funny debut!

The Good Buy Girls are a group of ladies in Saint Stanley, Virginia who love a good bargain. They have meetings to trade coupons, they go shopping together to get the best deals and they hate paying retail price! Maggie, Claire, Ginger and Joanne make up the Good Buy Girls. During a meeting, Claire arrives late; a bit frazzled. Maggie is worried because that is unlike Claire, but puts it out of her mind since Claire seems fine the next day. All is good until Claire finds a body- a body of a man she used to know with her knife in his chest.

The police zero in on Claire for a few reasons- and Maggie and the rest of Good Buy Girls are not happy because they know Claire could not have committed this crime. Maggie is also unhappy since the new sheriff in town is Sam- a boy who used to tease her mercilessly when she was a kid; then broke her heart in later years.

With the police intent on Claire being the #1 suspect- Maggie and the rest of Good Buy Girls have to put their heads together and help uncover more suspects. Will the Good Buy Girls clear Claire? Will Maggie and Sam let bygones be by bygones? Could there still be a spark with Maggie and Sam? Read the book and find out!

A great debut- the Good Buy Girls provide entertainment and a solid storyline. Eager to read the 2nd book in series- A Deal to Die For (release date- December 31, 2012).
