A book that I’ve been wanting to read..

MWF Seeking BFF: My Yearlong Search for a New Best Friend by Rachel Bertsche is the book that I’ve been wanting to read for some time. First, the title is catchy- It just rolls off the tongue and is the type of title that catches my attention. Second, the cover- hello white cover with brightly colored dots- this book cover just has a FUN look to it

Now since I have not read the book- I’m not sure exactly how it’ll go; but I think this book will have some funny aspects to it. Because, let’s face it, meeting and becoming friends with others is harder as we get older. In college, there were tons of ways to meet people; but in the real world- finding the time to meet new friends and for them to become more than just casual lunch buddies takes work.

Lastly, I’ll admit to wanting to read this book- because right now- the title is sort-of speaking to me. While I’m not married, I understand the author’s need to want to find more friends to share a bottle of wine and watch bad reality tv with. My once close-knit set of friends has slowly drifted apart (babies and marriage) and while we are all still friends- it’s harded to connect for time together between kids and marriage. Maybe someone needs to write a book SWF seeking New BFF- just a thought!

Man in the Blue Moon by Michael Morris

November’s She Reads book club pick is Man in the Blue Moon by Michael Morris. Besides being a pick of She Reads- Man in the Blue Moon has received some notable praise from other authors- specfically Pat Conroy.  When people in high places are praising the book and author, a reader is surely in for a good ride. This book is no exception.

Ella Wallace- a 35 year old woman with 3 kids and a husband who has left her for parts unknow. Her aunt warned her years ago about Harlan- “He’s a gambler at best. A con artist at worst”- but Ella was young, full of dreams and love for this man. Now she’s paying the price. Ella is on the verge of losing the one thing she has left (besides her 3 kids)- her land. Ella speaks of this land similarily to how Mr. O’Hara spoke of land to Scarlett in Gone with the Wind; but the land is important Ella and she needs to keep it- especially since if she loses the land it will be in the hands of a man who is not fit to spit on the land that Ella holds dear, much less own it.

When Ella was a teen, she was involved with Clive Gillespie. Harlan Wallace swept in and stole the young Ella from Clive- and that is not the first embarassment that Clive suffered at the hands of the Harlan- a man who had more charisma than needed. Clive is pressuring Ella to sell her precious land to him or face foreclosure- either way to him, he’ll own it. Clive plays it close to the vest as to why he wants the land, but secrets- they do have a way of coming out.

All while Ella is facing the propsect of losing her land, a package arrives for Ella- only it’s not quite the package that she had expected. It’s a man, Lanier, a relation of Harlan. Lanier has his own secrets that he would rather not tell, as well.

Does Ella lose her land? What is Clive’s secret plans with Ella’s land? Is Lanier a friend or foe? Will Harlan come back to Ella- and if he does, will Ella accept him back into her life after the pain he’s caused? The answers to all the above questions are in this beautifully written book- a book that will move you to tears at times.

This is a wonderfully written book: Themes of desperation, redemption, betrayal, love, loss, learning to become stronger than you ever had to be, and accepting people and yourself- are interweaved through the story- to create a tale that is dramatic, sorrowful, bittersweet, and engaging. This is a book that causes the reader to feel emotions- the reader will find aspects to be angry about, happy, sad, and hopeful. The reader will feel sadness during the book- and ultimately sadness when the book is finished; because Man in the Blue Moon is that good of a book.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

Ok I’ll freely admit that non-fiction is usually not my cup of tea. Why? Because so many of those books are about sad times, sad childhoods, dysfunctional families, drug/alcohol use- I could go on and on. While I enjoy a dark and twisted novel (I’m looking at you Gillian Flynn) I enjoy them even more because while the story may have a “ripped from the headlines” feel- it’s generally a work of fiction.

However, I’m in a book club and this was the pick. And while I’d probably given up halfway through the lady who picked the book was a little upset that the books she’s picked previously (before I was in the club) were not enjoyed like other picks. So I gave it the ole college try and I read the book. And the book made me mad, frustrated me, made me want to throw my Kindle against the wall. This book is depressing. It’s just one bad thing after another after another. This family has went through terrible things. But even through it all, I think, Jeanette hoped that somehow her family would change.

The parents in the book make a good case for people who should never, ever have children. It wasn’t they didn’t love them, I think they did-in their own dysfunctional way. They were just so ill-equipped, so irresponsible, so unfit to be parents. Dad’s smart- but a drunk. Mom’s got talent as an artist- but probably suffers from some sort of depression (maybe even bipolar). Mom’s an adventure junkie, and Dad is too.

No matter how bad the Dad is-stealing money from them, drinking away to nothing- you SORT OF understand. He’s an alcoholic. However, the mom…. Selfishly eating a candy bar while hiding under the blanket and her kids sitting around starving. The kids find a diamond ring (a 2 carat diamond ring) and want to pawn it- she won’t let them because the Dad took away her wedding ring and she thinks that “having something pretty will boost her self-esteem”. Sure, I understand that having pretty things will boost your self-esteem- but that is beyond selfish. I could go on and on about the tales of those 2 characters.

In the end, for better or worse, and some with more emotional wear on them- the kids survive the childhood. And still manage to feel good emotions (for the most part) about their parents.

This book, while great for some people, was not for me.

Has anyone read this book? Thoughts? Comments?

This is so me…

A friend of mine sent me this- she knows me too well! I’m very guilty of this. I make lists, keep my calendar updated when new books are being released- I’m all about some books!

My “to read” list never really decreases because I always find more to read.

I do a happy dance when my favorite authors have new books coming out.
My feet really tap-dance when I find an author that has several books already out, and I discover that I enjoy the books. Which means I don’t have to wait a year or so for a new book!

Nancy Drew….

Oh Nancy Drew- been around for years encouraging women to read and learn to like mysteries. My mom loved Nancy Drew when she was a girl, and so in our first mom-daughter bonding type of thing (at least in the world of reading) she checked out some Nancy Drew books for me. I enjoyed reading those Nancy Drew books, but where my mom hit the jackpot was when she bought the first five of Nancy Drew Case Files series. Now, that Nancy was something. She drove a Mustang, had these cool adventures- in the first few books, she solves a crime ring at Bedford Heights School, is in New York, then skiing in Connecticut (I think!), and takes a spring break trip to Florida-where she solves another crime. For a little girl who’d barely been out of the small town she lived in, this Nancy was a breath of fresh air.

Also- the book covers were so much cooler in the Case Files series. Nancy was sophiscated, her hair and clothes were so much cooler than the other Nancy Drew books at the library. This was a Nancy Drew that made reading, to me, so much better.

See the difference in the covers?

Nancy Drew Case Files

Nancy Drew (originals)

Now, as an adult, I have much respect for both covers- but as a kid- man, the Case Files were the way better looking covers (in my opinion!)

Any other Nancy Drew fans out there? If so, tell me your favorite book!
