Joanne Fluke, Hannah Swensen and the “triangle that needs to end”

Joanne Fluke was my first introduction to the world of cozy books. I read her 2nd book, Strawberry Shortcake Murder, and thought that it was quite enjoyable- a good town, nice characters, and a heroine who was funny, and charming in her own ways. She was a tad off-beat, not a size 6 and gorgeous character, and smart- something that, at the time, was a bit lacking in characters.

As I began to read the first book, and more in the series- I enjoyed Hannah and her family. The escapades, the small-town charms, and her dating life. She begun dating Norman Rhodes, the town dentist, and Mike Kingston, detective on Lake Eden’s police force, early in the series- and has continued to date both of the men throughout the series. Both men proposed to Hannah in Peach Cobbler Murder (the 7th book in the series) and she told them both she wasn’t ready and would let them know who she chooses when she’s ready. We’re now on book 18 and Hannah is still dating both men. This “triangle” was cute for awhile- but 11 books later0 it’s grown beyond old. Beyond.

And the romance- well neither romance is hot and heavy. At first, I appreciated that aspect- I don’t want to read a cozy where the “romance” scenes are hot and heavy all the time- I even thought it was refreshing to see a character that wasn’t bed-hopping, or had lewd references all the time. It even made sense for several books- Hannah had been involved in a brief affair with a college TA (with a fiancee) , and was still smarting from being duped by him. But, other cozy mystery writers (see Jenn McKinlay, Denise Swanson, Cleo Coyle) address the issue of romance, without it being lewd and bed-hopping- thus making the romance aspect more believable.

Now, I know cozy books usually have recipes mixed in with the plot, that the characters are part of the charm of the cozy world and the crimes are not graphic. This is what I like about the cozy series- but lately, it just seems that besides no movement on the romance front- that Joanne Fluke is more interested in writing a cookbook. So when she did write one- I thought “OK, maybe we’ll cut back just a teeny bit on the recipes”- but no, they have been increasing. Don’t get me wrong- they sound good for the most part. But at times it feels like they are “filler” to meet the quota of pages.

In the latest book, Red Velvet Cupcake Murder, the reader saw multiple mentions to the “chase” game that Moishe and Cuddles partake in each time they are together. I understand that for some readers this may have been the first book by her to read- so yes, you’d need to know about the game. But for long time readers, it’s getting old (although not as old as the “triangle”)- However, the ‘chase” game did not need to be mentioned multiple times in the same book. Once was sufficient to let new readers know, and then the continual description of what the cats were doing could have stopped.

One might wonder why I keep reading the books- I read forย 2 reasons: 1. Even with all the things I don’t care for about the book series now- they still have some good to them. They are like a big sweatshirt- cozy and comfy. and 2. because I want to know how this ends. I’ve invested time in Hannah and I want to see how the series will end.

Will ending the triangle breathe life back in this series? I don’t know. Sometimes I think it would. Sometimes, I think the series needs to take a break or end. These used to be pre-order on Amazon books- and now I just check them out from library.

Dear readers- what happens when a series you’ve been a faithful reader of starts to falter? Do you continue because you want to know what happens? Stop? Stop buying them and just borrow?

The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow by Rita Leganski

Rita Leganski’s novel, The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow, shows the reader a world where everything has sounds and a story. From the crayons, to grass growing, clothes, and sunshine. Even the secrets, the secrets that have been well-kept for years- they have a sound and a story. And are ready to tell their story to Bonaventure Arrow.

Bonaventure Arrow, the child of William and Dancy Arrow, has special powers. While he cannot speak- his hearing is above what anyone would think possible. He hears things that no one else can hear- that no one else would even think has sounds.ย  Bonaventure Arrow has a special mission- and while he is learning more about his mission- the reader is involved in a story that is magical. With tales of voodoo, hoodoo, gris-gris bags, and the deeply mystical, yet magical New Orleans area- a reader wants to find out more about Bonaventure’s mission- yet enjoys the time spent in his world.

Bonaventure Arrow, loved by both his mom and dad, is both a victim and survivor of events set in motion long before his time- choices that were made, choices that were forced upon people. And some choices that were not made out of love or forced- but made out of wicked desires.

Food & The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow…

I began The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow yesterday. And I love it. I’ll admit that while the cover intrigued me- I was a teensy bit worried when I heard the word “whimsical” used to describe the reading. I’m a fan of “whimsical” in my art; not always in my reading. Happily, I’m enjoying “Bonaventure” thus far.ย  There are already at least 2 or 3 secrets that I’m eager to know about!

When you read, do you get hungry? Do you think food and books go hand in hand? If so, She Reads has a new food blogger- and judging by her first recipe- I think our waist-lines are in trouble from the scrumptious food headed our way. Shoo Fly Marmalade is the first recipe- and if that doesn’t conjure up images of the South, visions of New Orleans, and long sunshine-y days- then nothing else will! I know I personally can’t wait to see what Ingrid, She Reads Food Blogger, creates each month to complement the book club pick.

Now just in case you are absolutely on pins and needles- and you must discuss The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow with someone, anyone- Goodreads Southern Lit Lovers has begun their discussion. But don’t you talk you ourself out- because there will be a Twitter chat with Rita Leganski on March 20th 2-3pmEST and the She Reads discussion begins on March 25ht. I’ll be hosting both- and I plan to have some good questions and maybe a surprise!

My On-Going Saga with the Library…

My On-going Saga with the Library is a pick up from a previous post of mine last summer title Free The Books! Free The Books!

To bring you, my readers, up to date on the latest saga: Picture this: it’s a month ago, and I request the book The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton- the main librarian assures me “it’ll be here in a couple of weeks”. Foolish me, I assumed that since we’d had so many problems the last time- that she might would TRY to get me this book. It’s been a month, and the book is still not here. I’ve given up and just bought it on my Kindle.

But you say- “Hey Traveling With T- these things happen- maybe she tried and could not get the book!’ I’ve thought this out as well- and I do not believe that the book has been requested. Because she’s always at the other library (yes, horror of horrors- she runs 2 libraries!) To remind you, dear readers, I live in a small town. A teeny town. Most people who go to the library only go for the computer. The other library is in a smaller town- and while I’ve never been there- I would assume it’s the same set-up.

Case in point: Last week, I went by to see if our library had Red Velvet Cupcake Murder by Joanne Fluke as I’ve been slightly disappointed in the past couple books. I go to our library and YES they have it! *jumping up and down for joy* BUT NO, I can’t check it out because the main librarian is not there, nor has shown the part-time librarian how to “check in new books in system” and won’t be back till Monday. Le sigh…. Big Le sigh… Ok, so I put my name on the “hold” list, verify that she’ll be in Monday, and leave. Not happy b/c I want the book, b/c I could have read the book before she’d be back at the library- but still. I goย  Tuesday and ask about the book. And guess what? She still has not checked the book in, did not come in on Monday, and won’t be back till later this week. So, the part time librarian just decides to let me have the book. Probably because she knows in her heart this book is never getting checked in. Becasue the main librarian will probably never really be around.

I get that budgets are being cut, people are having to tighten their belts (that’s why I’m trying to use the library more!) But this is getting ridiculous. I get that when I go to the library, it’s not like going to bookstore and being able to get what I want right then. BUT when the librarian appears to not being doing a part of her job- it makes me mad. Really.

#31daysandcounting- how long till The Secret Keeper arrives?

Skeleton Letters (a Scrapbooking Mystery) by Laura Childs

Skeleton Letters is another cozy written by Laura Childs. For the most part, I enjoyed the book. I like Carmela, like her friendship with Ava, adore the New Orleans setting. Cozy books are easy reads, fun reads. And I adore a good cozy!

Carmela and Ava are bringing items to the St. Tristan’s Church when they see a crime. One of their friends has been killed, and a priceless artifact has been stolen. Babcock, Carmela’s sweetie, tells her to let the police solve the crime- but for the scrapbook buddies at Memory Mine- that is not good enough. Carmela, with a teensy bit of pushing from friends, finds herself in the middle of this investigation- turning up angles, finding red herrings, and learning about the craziness of collectors.

As Carmela and Ava continue to investigate- they stumble upon clues that put them in direct line with the killer. Will Carmela be able to save the day or are her scrapbooking days over?
