Chick-Lit: Are the feel-good books wrecking havoc on women’s body images?

Chick-lit. Innocent, fun covers. Generally eye-catching, bright colors. Stories about a woman in need of something: a man, a new lease on life, maybe a better job. Stories that most women can relate to becasue they are things we’re looking for. There may be several variations on this “chick-lit” theme (for example: the woman may have a man- but he isn’t the right man and she won’t know till she meets another man or the the main character may be married; but an old boyfriend causes doubts).

Take Sophie Kinsella- her rise to fame in the chick-lit world began with Becky Bloomwood- a likeable, mid-20’s character who has a problem with shopping. Becky makes mistakes; but she’s still a likeable character- so the reader roots for her. Becky is obsessed with clothes- and resentful of another characters long-legs.

Take Emily Giffin- one might argue she is the queen of chick-lit- the 2 characters she’s known best for are Rachel and Darcy. Rachel is the plain, studious, lawerly character; while Darcy is the tall, thin, partying character. While Rachel is not “fat”, she does compare herself to Darcy in ways- and feels she can’t compete with her. In Something Blue– Darcy makes a comment about Dex loving her “long, strong back” and that she does not have any back-fat- while Rachel def has “back fat”.

In Lauren Weiseberger’s Chasing Harry Winston– the reader learns much about Adrianna- she’s fantastic looking, wildly sexy, and adventurous. Her other friends are “cute”; but blessed in other ways- not really their body.

In the Huffington Post article today, the subject is Body Image Affected by Chick Lit, Study Says– but is it? When you read a chick-lit book do you feel good about yourself? Or does the character’s flaws OR strengths make you wish you hadn’t eaten ice-cream while reading the book? Does reading chick-lit make you want to run to the gym and stay there till you look like Darcy?

Personally, I think it’s an interesting article. Maybe not completely a valid point- but interesting. If reading chick-lit is your thing- and you don’t feel bad about yourself after reading about the main characters- then I say go for it. Read till the cows come home. However, if you do feel bad about your body image while reading- I suggest putting the books down for a bit. Take some time to assess things- do you have unrealistic expectations of what your body should look like? Because let’s face it- no matter how many hours spent at the gym; there are just some things that can’t be changed. No matter how badly you wish they could. And remember- take the whole “chick-lit” thing with a large grain of salt. Chick-lit is to be enjoyed, such as romantic-comedies are to also be enjoyed- life is not like either situation so you have to make the most of what you have, and not wish that things would be better if you were in a chick-lit book or rom-com movie.

I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

Fun. Fluffy. Cute. Light reading. That’s what I love about Sophie Kinsella’s books- and this one is no different.

Poppy loses her engagement ring- a family heirloom. She’s afraid to tell Mangus- her beloved. Then to top off the really bad day she’s having- someone steals her phone. That she’s told everyone to call if the ring is found. Nightmare. Until………. Poppy spies a phone in a trash bin. Assuming the finder-keepers philosphy (because why would someone who needs the phone throw it away, right?) she takes the phone and alerts everyone to her new number.

Then… she finds out that this phone is a company phone. And a man named Sam wants the phone back. Through some talk, he agrees to let her keep the phone for a bit- and Poppy agrees to forward all his messages. It’s an uncoventional arrangement- but it’s working for them.

As Poppy and Sam trade texts back and forth- they become friends. Then, things start happening that threaten to derail their friendship and Sam’s company. Throw in some confusion about a wedding- and you have I’ve Got Your Number!

It’s a perfect fluffy read. Read and love it!

It’s Valentine’s Day- xoxo

It’s Valentine’s Day. I hope that someone has shown you some love today- or that you’ve taken the time to show some appreciation to yourself. And, speaking from personal experience- if you are with someone who can’t bother to show you love- then take the steps to change the situation (if you are not ok with it). Post- Valentine’s Day break-ups can suck- but it sucks even more when you are with someone who can’t even acknowledge the day in some way- even just a simple card. Tis better to be your own Valentine and show love to yourself & friends & family. Trust me on this. #lessonsIlearnedthehardway

My Valentine’s Day is going fine. Chocolates from my dad, hearing from friends, and my gift to myself: earring from Dogeared Jewelry. Tonight brownies with pink frosting, frozen hot chocolate drinks and Glee.

My Valentine’s List:

1. Thanks to all of you who stop by, comment, like, share my posts. When I began this blog, I just hoped that my little piece of cyber-space got a little positive attention- but ya’ll have far exceeded my expectations. Thanks to all 🙂

2. To my #srblog ladies- can I just say how much you ladies rock? I mean really?! You get out there on Twitter and just make a difference. #totallywarmsmyheart

3. Deep South Mag- what can I say? You’ve been FABULOUS! xoxo

4. To She Reads Book Club- you’ve made a girl feel welcome- and I’m eager to begin my new role as She Reads Online Book Club Leader. Thanks for everything!

6. Lastly, to every book-ish person I tweet with, talk to, email, etc- keep on reading, reviewing and writing. Seriously, ya’ll deserve tons of glittery hearts 🙂

Warm appreication & lots of good thoughts,

Malicious Masquerade

It’s Cindy Bedford’s  wedding day- what should be one of the happiest days of her life. That is, until the groom never shows up for the wedding. Cindy’s dad, Jasper, has always liked Tyler. Tyler works for Jasper and seems to be a good fit in the company and an excellent match for Cindy. When Tyler does not show up, Jasper begins to wonder if he’s made a mistake trusting Tyler. His suspicions grow when he finds that his home safe has been robbed, and several millions have been moved to off-shore accounts.

Cindy, though, believes that Tyler must be in some kind of trouble. So she hires Carter Mays, PI to find Tyler.  Carter takes the job and begins a search for Tyler. As Carter searches for Tyler, he begins to find out some things about Tyler- and yet some things are still just clues.

As the reader gets further in the story, it’s apparent that everyone wants Tyler found. Just some want Tyler found for reasons they are not willing to share. Was Cindy right and Tyler was kidnapped- thus leading to Cindy still getting her happily ever after? Or does the investigation for Tyler lead to more information that could shatter Cindy’s world?

Looking for a quick, easy, enjoyable read? Malicious Masquerade may just be the thing.
