All The Beautiful Lies

Summary: Harry Ackerson has always considered his step-mother Alice to be sexy and beautiful, in an “other worldly” way. She has always been kind and attentive, if a little aloof in the last few years.

Days before his college graduation, Alice calls with shocking news. His father is dead and the police think it’s suicide. Devastated, he returns to his father’s home in Maine. There, he and Alice will help one another pick up of the pieces of their lives and uncover what happened to his father.

Shortly after he arrives, Harry meets a mysterious young woman named Grace McGowan. Though she claims to be new to the area, Harry begins to suspect that Grace may not be a complete stranger to his family. But she isn’t the only attractive woman taking an interest in Harry. The sensual Alice is also growing closer, coming on to him in an enticing, clearly sexual way.

Mesmerized by these two women, Harry finds himself falling deeper under their spell. Yet the closer he gets to them, the more isolated he feels, disoriented by a growing fear that both women are hiding dangerous—even deadly—secrets . . . and that neither one is telling the truth.

 

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:

I was late to the game with Peter’s second book, The Kind Worth Killing, till Allison Winn Scotch raved about it in this #30Authors post. I pretty much immediately went to library and requested it via inter-library loan and then ignored everyone for 2 days while I read (except for my cats- I did not ignore them!)

So since I LOVED TKWK, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for his new releases. Her Every Fear, which released in 2017 was good, but I did not LOVE it like TKWK.  And All The Beautiful Lies suffered a similar fate. I liked it. It had secrets and lies (boy, did it have lies) but that book high I got from TKWK has just not been as readily accessible in the other Peter Swanson books I’ve read.

 

What I liked:

The cover. His covers are always so interesting and eye catching. I can see me strolling through a bookstore or airport and stopping to look at these covers!

The lies. I like good lies in books. I like good liars. The 2 women in this book were pulling this aspect off very well.

How everything ties together. This book is like a puzzle- you have some pieces up front and some suspicions. But as the chapters roll by, and the pieces are revealed- I was not always sure where Peter was headed till a certain point- then it all begin to make perfect sense (in a very twisted way!)

 

Bottom line: This book is def worth reading. It’s got some good (twisty) places, some characters that you are not sure of their motivations, etc- but I’m still saying The Kind Worth Killing is the best of the 3 out of 4 books of Peter’s that I’ve read.
