The prompt is a book discussion or topic- and today, we are going to talk about those people that are newbies in the publishing world- the debut authors.
Let’s play a numbers game- how many books are published in a day? And how many are debut authors?
( I have no numbers- just wanted us all to think!)
With debut authors- life gets tricky. They have no established fan base. We have no personal relationship. All we have is a guess- a summary, a plot that catches our attention and maybe a book cover that catches our eye.
Take a gander at your bookshelf- how many debut authors did you read in 2014? How many are still on your bookshelves waiting to be read?
For me, I read a few. Not a lot. Probably 20 or less.
Now, looking ahead to 2015- I have 2 debut authors for January- which I’m pretty excited about.
How many debut authors are on your radar for 2015?
And… in a world where hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of books are published- how does a debut author catch your eye?

I had such great luck with debuts this year – I read more than ever before (but I still think it was less than your 20 – ha!) and 5 out of 13 of my overall Best Books of the Year were debuts (Black Chalk, The Wife, The Maid, and The Mistress, Shotgun Lovesongs, An Untamed State, and The Martian). I have a couple on tap for 2015, but am on the lookout for more!

I’m getting together my best books list- and trying to find a way to keep track of how many debuts I read for next year!
This is an interesting topic. It is indeed hard to be a debut author in this world. I honestly read just a few this year, but really enjoyed the ones I picked. I think those authors that work with publishers have it easier, because sometimes publishers really do some great marketing, and some of their books are really hyped when they finally arrive.
So I guess they catch my eye, based on the hype around them, otherwise I would have no clue their coming. I have realized though, that I review many Indie books, so through review books I get to discover some debut authors that don’t fit the aforementioned category.
YES! It is so hard. The debuts that I have read had a publicist really working or the author talking to me MONTHS before the book was even to be published- trying to line up a potential review.
I don’t read a lot of indies because between my She Reads stuff, review requests and personal reading- I just don’t have enough hours in the day. But I love when people do find books that fly under the radar!
I read at least ten impressive debut novels & short story collections in 2014. What catches my eye? Sometimes the hype, sometimes it’s because the publisher is one I trust. Other times it’s because it was offered on Goodreads or Librarything giveaways. I’ve found a couple through blog reviews and some through browsing the new book shelves at the library.

I have read less this year but hope to change that for next year. My TBR pile, Lauren Graham-Maybe Someday. The Wife, Maid & Mistress was one of my favorite books. I hope she writes more-I like her writing style.

I get a lot of new author recommendations from book blogs & also from Goodreads giveaway contests. I also peruse the paperbacks at Target & sometimes a cover catches my eye. Many times, in fact!
I have to be SO careful cruising the aisles at Targer/ B&N. Somehow the whole book section just comes home with me 🙂
I enter everything but never win! I get a lot from the library now. I used to go to the b&n or half priced books.
It’s SO hard to win at Goodreads, etc. The library is good!
