Interview With Patti Callahan Henry

Hi Patti- so glad to have you back at Traveling With T to talk about your latest book, THE IDEA OF LOVE!

T, Thanks so much for having me back. You know I love talking about books and stories. It’s a privilege to be here.

Let’s talk about a quote in the book: “As we say in the South, don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.” Why do you think Southerners tell such good stories? In society, it’s rarely; if ever, acknowledged that a Northern person might could tell a good story- it’s almost always attributed as a Southern thing.

I was raised up North, a child in a suburb outside Philadelphia, so I don’t own any rights to “southern storyteller.” But I remember reading a quote by Eudora Welty and she says, “Southerners love a good tale. They are born reciters, great memory retainers, diary keepers, letter exchangers.” I don’t know how much of that is true, or how much of that is a mythology of the south. But I do know that once I moved here to the South, I did pay more attention to the stories told. This isn’t an academic answer but a personal one — I think it has something to do with the accent, the landscape, a sense of a failed past and a righteous sense of humor. These things combine for a great story.

How did you decide on a cover? You’ve managed to pick a cover that speaks to the heart of the story and  yet could make readers wonder exactly what the cover means. Beautiful cover and one that will look so nice on many bookshelves!

AH! I have nothing to do with the cover other than approving it. My publishing house, St. Martins Press, works hard to get the exact right image for the story. I’m thrilled that you love it.

Did you consider an alternate ending for THE IDEA OF LOVE? Or did you know how you would end it always?

I always knew how it would end, but I wasn’t at all sure how I would get there. There were some good surprises along the way, and I hope there are for the reader also!
