Night Night, Sleep Tight

Arthur Unger is out for his nightly swim. He’s looking forward to his daughter, Deidre, arriving the next day for help in selling the family house- even though he and Deidre do not have an easy-going relationship.

He feels a tinge of guilt about some things of the past- and wonders if there is time to make up for the ways he failed his children. Mostly, he’s concerned with the next chapter in his life, though. He’s swimming and imagining how the story will play out.

But Arthur could never have expected what happened next……

When Deidre arrives in Hollywood, she goes to her old house. She can’t get in and wonders where her father and brother are. What she finds shocks her to her core. Her father is dead!

The police are called to the house- and because Arthur died an “unexplained death” the police begin looking at everyone who had access to the house. Asking questions. Making Deidre nervous.

Deidre is put in charge of Arthur’s literary papers- a monumental job, at the minimum. She’s unsure if she can do it- but she knows she must. Shortly, though, Deidre begins to feel something isn’t right- and then she knows it when many of Arthur’s papers are destroyed in a fire.

Being back in Hollywood makes Deidre think of the night her life changed- the night that her best friend killed her mother’s boyfriend, Tito, and the subsequent auto accident that Deidre was in the fateful night. Is it crazy to think that night might be linked to Arthur’s death?

The longer Deidre is in Hollywood- the more someone makes it a point to let her know that some secrets are best buried………..

 

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:

WOW! This is my first Hallie Ephron book and I was instantly drawn into the story. Hallie does an excellent job connecting the past day event with the current day events- and the more the story twisted and turned- the more I wanted to know what happened that night.

With each person Deidre encounters, there is an air of an “unreliable narrator”- you can tell that each person wants to tell their story, with their personal brand of embellishment- and yet, you can’t completely discount their theory.

I really liked the format of the story- sections of the book being broken down into days- with just enough references to the past to keep me guessing and wondering all of what happened that night.

This book has a very Mary Higgins Clark feel with suspense mounting chapters- and I totally dug that vibe.

There was one reveal that was not that surprising- but the major reveal was a big surprise- so yay for that!
