Author Interview: Ann Garvin, THE DOG YEAR

author interviews

Today, I have Ann Garvin stopping by to talk about her book, THE DOG YEAR. Ann is an author and member of Tall Poppy Writers, a group who has the tagline: Bright Authors. Smart Readers. Good Books. (Which I LOVE, by the way!) Even more exciting, on December 15th, Ann will be interviewed by Kate Moretti (who you might remember from her guest post at Traveling With T). Check out Tall Poppy Writers on Facebook for more info!

But, now, let’s get to Ann’s interview!

What was the inspiration for The Dog Year?

Empathy, I think. I saw a woman shoplift. She was not a young kid, was well dressed and looked like anyone who might be my friend. I got to thinking what would drive a woman to shoplift and how could I come to know and understand that person. Ergo, Lucy Peterman in The Dog Year

Are any of the characters in The Dog Year based on people in real life? Or are they just characters you imagined?

I think my characters are a mixed up mash-up of all the people I’ve ever known or met all jumbled in my  head. Then, when I create people for my books, they all reassemble in different ways and means. If my head was a time machine or in charge of time travel we would all land in another zone with different heads and bodies.

Can you describe The Dog Year  in 10 words or less?

A woman, her dog, and two secrets that make and break her. That’s 12, okay?

Will you be going on a book signing tour?

My book came out in June and I’ve been traveling both through e-travel and real travel.

Do you have a writing space? A writing routine?

I wake every morning at 5 AM, get a cup of coffee and work until the kids get up and then off to my job I go.

Would you, Ann,  want The Dog Year  to be made into a movie? If so, do you have a cast in mind?

Oh yes, I would. Who wouldn’t? In fact I’ve put together a Pinterest dream team!

Lucy Peterman: I want Frances McDormand but I think she’s too old for Lucy, which I’m sad about. So instead Kate Winslet.

Mark: Timothy Olyphant

Richard: Matt Damon

Sidney: Natalie Portman

Charles: Justin Kirk from weeds and

Sara: Kaitlyn Dever from Justified

Ugh, don’t get me excited!

Ann- what are you working on next? Can you give us any hints?

I have a book that will be hopefully coming out in late 2015 or early 2016.

It may or may not include a character from The Dog Year, and a killer title. The rest is a secret!

And now, for an extra special treat (and just to get you even more excited about the interview and giveaway on December 15 @ Tall Poppy Writers Facebook page)- here’s more about Ann- the author spotlight side. The side where reveals a bit about the person behind the title of author. Enjoy!

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Jane Hamilton, Elizabeth Strout, Kattie Moretti, and Elizabeth Berg. Oh and Nora Ephron but isn’t she everyone’s favorite?

When you are not writing, what are some of your favorite things to do?

I teach a lot and I love it. I also LOVE movies, my dogs, and hanging out with my 2 daughters.  That’s my life in a nut shell. Oh, and I’m in love.

What are some of the books you are looking forward to reading in 2015?

I have a huge stack on my bedside table. Check out They are all there.

Looking for Me (Beth Hoffman) all of Lesley Kagen’s books, Katheryn Craft’s and all the rest of Karen Karbo’s and Sally Koslow. I could go on and on.

Do you have any #literaryconfessions?

Oh God, so many. I’ve started and stopped reading Dickens too many times to mention.

Do you have a #literarycrush?

God yes. I’m totally in love with Elizabeth Gilbert and for men? George Saunders.

What books will you always make room for on your shelf?

Anything that keeps the pages turning and awake into the night. I don’t have just one kind of book I read. I read everything!

Is there a book that has already been published that you wished you had written?

Olive Kittredge!!

Hope you enjoy the look at Ann’s life- and that you will join in the party at Tall Poppy Writers on December 15th!
