This book was sent to Traveling With T for review consideration.

How Lucky Got His Shoe

Summary: When a Humboldt penguin was born at the Santa Barbara Zoo, zookeepers saw that the baby was having difficulty walking. They worried his foot was not growing properly. Teva, a local shoe company, was asked to make him a shoe. If a big elephant with a foot problem could wear one, so could a small penguin. This is the true story, told with affection and illustrated with oil paintings, of how Lucky got his shoe, his name and his ability to walk and swim like all the other penguins.

Miss A’s reactions:

Why is the penguin wearing a shoe? Can I go see him? Does he have a purple shoe?

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:

Technically, How Lucky Got His Shoe is for an older child (I believe age range is 5-12) so Miss A was a bit too young. However, this book indulged her fascination with the word “why?” and it provided a nice lesson for overcoming obstacles in your life- whether you are an animal or human.

I’ll even admit that Lucky’s story brought a tear to my eye and I’m glad to see that it ended on a great note!

Bottom line:

While Miss A did not love this book like she has others, she was interested in the story and still wants to know if Lucky has a purple shoe (her fav color is purple!)
