Chasing Your Dreams by Kristy Woodson Harvey

Good morning, everyone! Tamara, thank you so much for having me today and for letting me be a part of your fantastic blog. I have been following Traveling with T for years, long before I knew I was going to be an author, long before I could even have dreamed of having a book on a shelf. So getting to participate here from the other side, feels like just yet another level of this dream come true!

Tamara wrote the sweetest post on Facebook about Dear Carolina a few weeks ago. In it, she called me book, “Part love story to sweet Carolina and part empowerment for chasing your dreams.”

 Empowerment for chasing your dreams.

That might be one of my new favorite phrases. I’ll be honest, when I wrote Dear Carolina, I didn’t have women chasing their dreams in mind. I thought I was writing a book about the ways families are created, writing a book about the emotions of navigating a very open family adoption.

But, in the process of doing that, I was chasing my dreams. Well, my dream, actually. Because I only had one of them: Get published by a “Big 5” New York publishing house.

I wanted it so badly I could taste it; wanted it so badly it kept me up at night. And here, in the pages of this book, Khaki and Jodi are chasing their dreams too. They’re finding out who they want to be, what they want to do with the rest of their lives, what that’s going to look like. Their daughter Carolina is a big part of that discovery process. But, this book, at its core, is really about these women.

Khaki and Jodi are dream chasers. And that makes a lot of sense because I’m a dream chaser too. In fact, I would dare to say that anyone who sets off down this road with even an inkling of what lies before them, of the rejection and the heartache, the worry and the waiting. (Oh, the waiting. The waiting is really the worst part, if you ask me!) You have to have a certain level of empowerment to read that the chances of that agent you want requesting your manuscript after reading your query letter are one in five thousand—and decide to send it anyway.

You have to just close your eyes, hit “send” and believe.

Which is sort of the same thing that’s happening to me now all over again. A year ago, getting a publishing deal was the end all, be all; it was the only dream I could even imagine. But, now that Dear Carolina’s publication date is here, all those fears flood back. Because this book is going out into the world, like it or not. It may sell a million copies and it might sell two. People might love it and they might one-star it up and down Amazon. But that’s what you face when you’re chasing a big dream; that’s the risk and reward of life.

I know that and so do Khaki and Jodi. And, as we all know, as we see in the pages of this book, life favors the brave—but not all the time. Some dreams still aren’t going to come true; some things are going to turn out differently than you had pictured them. But, in the midst of all of that, in between dreams turning sour and dreams coming true, you just have to keep chasing. You might not catch the dream you’re running after. But, sometimes, in the most magical way, an even sweeter one ends up coming true.
