One Day in December

Summary: A love story about what happens after you meet, or rather, don’t meet the one.

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic…and then her bus drives away.

Certain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.

What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.

 

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:

First, a hat tip to Jen Tarheel Reader, because without her, this book would never have been on my radar.

When Jen asked me if I wanted to read this book with her and her friends, I at first was just a teensy bit hesitant. I’m kinda of in a love/hate thing with romance books currently. I mean, I love the whole HEA ending and the warm fuzzies I get from reading some of them, but I’m also getting older and perhaps a bit cynical and sometimes that whole manufactured conflict on the way to the HEA ending (yes, I know it has to be manufactured conflict since the author HAS to write conflict in the story, BUT STILL) can be enough to make me say “For Pete’s sake…. Quit acting like children. He’s into you, you’re into him. Just skip over to HEA lane.”  And I was worried that this would be one of those type books. But it wasn’t. Not even.

First, it’s less of a typical romance. It’s I guess chick lit would be the best way to describe it- so while I figured there would be a happy ending- I wasn’t sure what form it would take.

Second, the story had some meat to it. It felt more “real” and I was totally into the character’s lives- their choices, their mistakes, their struggles.

 

What I liked:

The cover. It’s making me smile because it’s sweet.

The fact that the book had a perfect vibe of a Hallmark Movie/Love Actually mash-up. It made me feel like a kid on a Christmas morning as I kept flipping pages to find out Laurie, Sarah & Jack’s story.

The ending. ❤ ❤

 

Bottom line: ‘Tis the season for happy books, happy reading time and the smell of possibilities of love in the air. This book is perfect for the holiday season.
