Are You Sleeping
Summary: Serial meets Ruth Ware’s In A Dark, Dark Wood in this inventive and twisty psychological thriller about a mega-hit podcast that reopens a murder case—and threatens to unravel the carefully constructed life of the victim’s daughter.
The only thing more dangerous than a lie…is the truth.
Josie Buhrman has spent the last ten years trying to escape her family’s reputation and with good reason. After her father’s murder thirteen years prior, her mother ran away to join a cult and her twin sister Lanie, once Josie’s closest friend and confidant, betrayed her in an unimaginable way. Now, Josie has finally put down roots in New York, settling into domestic life with her partner Caleb, and that’s where she intends to stay. The only problem is that she has lied to Caleb about every detail of her past—starting with her last name.
When investigative reporter Poppy Parnell sets off a media firestorm with a mega-hit podcast that reopens the long-closed case of Josie’s father’s murder, Josie’s world begins to unravel. Meanwhile, the unexpected death of Josie’s long-absent mother forces her to return to her Midwestern hometown where she must confront the demons from her past—and the lies on which she has staked her future.
Traveling With T’s Thoughts:
I’ve missed the train on podcasts like Serial, but if they are half as entertaining as Are You Sleeping- I need to rectify that immediately (hit me up with your best podcasts, please!)
What I liked:
The cover. Very eye catching!
How Kathleen broke the book down. I loved the excerpts from the podcast, the tweets, etc. It just gave it a more real feel!
Poppy. I know, we’re not supposed to like her- but she totally had a Gale Weathers vibe going that I dug!
Bottom line: This book sucked me in less than 10 pages into book and did not let me go till I finished it. It fed the soul of this Law & Order/Discovery ID fan 🙂

Have we talked about our shared love for Discovery ID??? 🙂 I don’t miss an episode of Dateline, 48 Hours, and my favorite, Cold Justice, now on Oxygen. And the 20/20 on Friday was a case just a few miles from my house. Yikes.
Ummmm… NO! I don’t watch allllllll the shows on Discovery ID, but I do love a good missing persons/murder story (especially when the family is acting shady!) Did you see that story about Tara Grinstead- the missing teacher from Georgia? They recently re-showed that story and had an update in it!
Paper, books, and now Discovery ID? You are my best friend 🙂
I have seen the one about Tara Grinstead, but I can’t remember if I saw the update! I need to try to find the info. When I see the re-runs come on, I fast forward to the end to see if there is an update! Yeah, I don’t watch everything on ID, but when it first started, I just about did. I don’t mind being your BFF, not one bit! 💕
I LOVE that we love so many of the same things 🙂 🙂 I SO wished we lived closer!
you asked about podcasts? Up and Vanished is about the Tara Grinstead case. It’s amazing and you should totally listen.
I JUST started listening to it! I’m only on epi 1, but I’m really liking it!
P.s. Great review and I want to read this one even more now!
Thank you! I hope you get your hands on a copy SOOOOOOON!
I’m reading this now. I’m 148 pages in and it’s moving very slowly for me. I’m hoping it picks up.
I thought it was great. It just really gripped me!
