What You See

Jane Ryland, our favorite reporter, is back with a story that intertwines lies, blackmail, and family drama.

Jane is interviewing for new reporter job- one back on television- when she hears the news about an incident at Fanueil Hall. The TV station sends her to the scene with a small recorder and tells her to get the story.

Jane’s love interest, Detective Jake Brogan, is already there and trying to determine what happened. With multiple people on the scene- shooting video and taking pictures on a lovely day- he knows in his gut that someone, somewhere has the crime on camera and can help them. The problem is finding the person!

Jane and Jake find themselves in that uncomfortable situation of wanting to be able to share things with each other and yet unable to share because of professional obligations.

Complicating matters further is the fact that Jane’s sister, Melissa, is in town- and her soon to be stepdaughter- may or may not have been kidnapped by the child’s stepfather. Melissa calls Jane- and Jane soon has to decide what’s more important- telling Jake everything, getting the news story on the stabbing or finding out what has happened to Gracie.

Will Jane and Jake solve their respective problems? Will Jane go back to being a TV reporter? What, if anything, will change in their relationship?

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:

I have been a Hank Phillippi Ryan for a few years. I adore the Jane Ryland series- love how Jane is so kick-butt, strong and determined. I equally adore the relationship between Jane and Jake- which was simmering in earlier books but now appears to be darn near boiling hot now.

Hank’s style of writing is one that I’ve never really experienced with anyone but her. She doesn’t exactly use cliffhangers in her chapters- but her way of telling the story- connecting the dots, intertwining the characters- well, it makes for some entertaining reading.

I also like the ethical issues she raises with Jane and Jake’s relationship. Can two people who truly are crazy for each other- but are on different sides when it comes to solving crime- can they truly be together? It’s an on-going theme!

WHAT YOU SEE sheds some light on Jane’s family- as we get to meet Melissa (who I don’t recall meeting in previous books) and puts Jane in a situation of where she has to question what is really important: family or getting the story.

With a crime that has themes of conspiracy and extortion- it’s a story that you can sink your teeth into and enjoy!
