Dabney Kimball Beech, 48 years old. Resident of Nantucket her entire life. Works at the Nantucket Visitor Center- which is appropriate- because Dabney is a walking advertisement for life in Nantucket.
Dabney has a daughter, Agnes, who she loves with all her being. And a husband, Box, who she cherishes in her own way. Dabney also has a special gift….. She’s a matchmaker. With over 40 couples still together after being matched by Dabney- she’s something of a island legend. When Dabney sees pink- it’s a sign. And when she sees green- it’s a bigger sign. Why, oh, why if Dabney is such a matchmaker- why does she just cherish her husband- but not LOVE him? Dabney’s heart was broken 27 years ago by her one true love, Clendendin Hughes- a man she thought she would be with forever. After that, love became her focus for everyone else…. Just not for herself.
It’s getting to be summertime at Nantucket and Dabney is eagerly awaiting everything- the weather, the festivals, the food! Until two things happen- she gets an email from Clendendin Hughes telling that he’s coming back to Nantucket and he hopes to talk to her and she finds out that Agnes is engaged. The news of Agnes being engaged should be happy news- except that Dabney knows she is not with her forever man- because she sees green.
Dabney knows she needs to help Agnes see the light about her engagement, but she doesn’t want to ruin the mother/daughter relationship. When Agnes decides to stay with Dabney for the summer, it seems like that might be the first step on the way to helping end the engagement. Little does Dabney know events that will happen that summer that will change and shape all their lives for years to come.
THE MATCHMAKER- a story of love, of finding love, and making choices- to stay content or to live out the rest of life blissfully in love- not knowing how long “forever” truly will be.
Traveling With T’s Thoughts:
Summer. It happens every year. Around March or April, I get the itch. The itch for summer- for the sun, the pool water- the lure of the perfect day. And, nothing goes better for a day at the pool (or beach!) than a book by Elin Hilderbrand. Elin is summer to me. She writes these stories about folks living life in Nantucket- a place that sounds magical and dreamy to me.
Her stories always have some pain in them- they are not perfectly light and fluffy. However, they are always enjoyable. I finish reading the book and I’m fulfilled. Happy. Like I am after the perfect pool day. And then I eagerly await the next book.
THE MATCHMAKER has many themes- love, finding yourself, being able to stand on your own, and letting go. I highly recommend it to be read in your comfy chair with a glass of your favorite beverage,
