The Liar by Nora Roberts

Traveling With T purchased this book for listening while walking time.

The Liar

Summary: Shelby Foxworth lost her husband. Then she lost her illusions …

The man who took her from Tennessee to an exclusive Philadelphia suburb left her in crippling debt. He was an adulterer and a liar, and when Shelby tracks down his safe-deposit box, she finds multiple IDs. The man she loved wasn’t just dead. He never really existed.

Shelby takes her three-year-old daughter and heads south to seek comfort in her hometown, where she meets someone new: Griff Lott, a successful contractor. But her husband had secrets she has yet to discover. Even in this small town, surrounded by loved ones, danger is closer than she knows—and threatens Griff, as well. And an attempted murder is only the beginning …

Traveling With T’s Thoughts:

I normally buy the unabridged audio book when I use an Audible credit; but gosh, I wished i had bought the abridged version of this one because there were so many details that could have been cut.

The sound you heard when I finished the last note of this book? It was a pure sigh of relief that I didn’t have to listen to “That’s right, Callie Rose” one more time. A phrase that was repeated so many times that if I took a drink each time said, I would STILL be drunk.

And the accents? Yeesh.

I was really surprised because I had just listened to Listen for the Lie, which was also narrated by January LaVoy, and loved it. But her narration with some characters in The Liar felt off.

Also, the length of this book was not necessary. It was just padded with rinse and repeat dialogue and details that were not needed.

What I liked:

Honestly? Not really much.  The plot was just ok. The narration? Eh, it was ok. The length of this book? FOREVER.

Bottom line: This did not live up to Nora’s normal standards or January LaVoy’s narration ways.

  1. While i had a short glimpse through the blurb, I thought it was a good concept for a novel. It looks like the cook messed up the meal, despite having the good ingredients and a solid recipe.
